Job Description:

Business Analytics is the analytics centre of excellence for Canadian Operations and is comprised of exceedingly savvy and intellectually curious professionals who are transforming business intelligence at Sun Life Financial (SLF) Canada. Launched in June 2016, the Insights and Discovery team provides diagnostic analytical services to partners in Canadian Operations in order to significantly improve the overall value creation potential of Business Analytics. We are currently looking for a Senior Statistical Analyst who has a passion for turning data into actionable insight to drive business decisions.

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Insights and Discovery, the Analyst will act as a domain expert and lead developer on a range of projects and initiatives for the Client Care Centre. Working with a diverse and motivated team, the Analyst will apply in-depth statistical analysis in order provide insights and solutions.

The incumbent’s primary focus will be to support the objectives of internal partners by performing and delivering complex statistical analyses for rapid decision-making. In this role, the Analyst will use data from a variety of operational and customer-facing systems to generate business insights, actionable recommendations, and opportunities for improvements. The incumbent will also be involved in gathering requirements, exploratory data discovery and analysis, as well as process modelling and documentation

Flexibility and versatility is key in this role as part of the Analyst responsibility will be to connect with clients effectively to insure a successful delivery of the analytical recommendations.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Formally applies statistical /scientific rigour to the problems at hand. Ensures their work is thoroughly tested and mathematically sound.
  • Ensures that results meet the clients’ needs. Makes suggestions to improve the client’s data driven decision-making with statistical methods.
  • Excellent organizational skills to ensure work is documented and transferable.
  • Shares the responsibility of effectively presenting analytical results and findings to senior business leaders.
  • Responsible for ongoing research and development in a Continuous Improvement environment.
  • Continues to maintain awareness of relevant trends in the industry.
  • Acts as a technical team lead on projects when required.
  • Work with project management leaders by adhering to deadlines and being involved in requirement gathering.


  • Minimum of Bachelor degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Econometrics, or equivalent. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated data transformation & manipulation experience.
  • Knowledge of Agile framework.
  • Extensive programming experience with Matlab, SAS, R, Python or Julia.
  • Five plus years of experience in statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of machine learning methods and big data platforms (Hive, Spark, Hadoop).
  • Experience with analysis of unstructured data.
  • Practical leadership experience on enterprise projects.
  • Insurance or Financial Services industry experience.
  • Good team player.
  • Ability to peer review and be self-critical.
  • Desire to push for excellence.
  • Ability and motivation to work on problems.
  • Value driven.
